Common Production Equipment for Precision Machined Parts
CNC Milling Machines
CNC milling machines remove material from workpieces with rotary cutting tools that produce parts with exact shapes and features. In the milling machine, the workpiece is clamped on the table, which travels in 3 (unless four or 5-Axis) directions, X, Y, and Z, with the cutting tool spinning.
Complex geometries like slots, pockets, and contoured surfaces can be machined in a single operation with advanced setups like 4-axis and 5-axis milling machines, which move the workpiece and/or cutting tool simultaneously in multiple directions.
CNC Turning and Lathes
CNC turning is a process that involves using a lathe, which rotates the workpiece at high speeds, removing material with a stationary cutting tool until it's shaped correctly. This method usually produces cylindrical or conical pieces, such as shafts, bolts, and bushings, by removing material from the rotated surface.
CNC lathes can perform operations from facing and threading to grooving and drilling, with some high-end machines having live tooling so they can also mill features (flats, slots, etc.) without requiring setup for a secondary operation.
Electrical Discharge Machines (EDM)
EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is a CNC method where electrical sparks are used to remove material from a workpiece, which is usually of a conductive material, often hard metals such as steel or titanium.
A workpiece is submerged in a dielectric fluid, with a charged electrode wired above and near, generating controlled sparks that remove material without touching the workpiece.
CNC Grinding
CNC grinding utilizes a spinning abrasive wheel to grind away tiny amounts of material from a workpiece to yield micro-smooth dimensions and surface finishes. This process is used to finish parts that demand close tolerances and smoother surfaces, for instance, gears, bearings, and the cutting tools plated with thin coating materials.
CNC grinding machines precisely control the position and speed of the wheel, allowing for surface grinding, cylindrical grinding, and centerless grinding.
