Contoured CNC Parts

Contoured CNC Parts

Contoured CNC parts are components with curved outlines, shaped recesses or three-dimensional working surfaces. They are used as shaped tooling nests, instrument housing parts and curved accessories in textile and automated testing equipment.

Core Advantages

Consistent Shaped Interfaces

Contour dimensional tolerances of ±0.03 mm control variation in the specified profile. Where a shaped nest contacts a matching workpiece, this limits the machining contribution to the interface gap instead of leaving the contact geometry defined only by the overall part envelope.

Profiles Linked to Mounting Features

Contouring and accessible mounting features can be machined from one setup. When a curved insert bolts to a fixture base, this retains a common reference between the functional profile and its attachment points, reducing errors introduced by transferring the component between unrelated setups.

Controlled Surface Texture

Contoured surfaces are available at Ra 1.6–6.3 µm. Where a workpiece rests against or moves across the profile, the specified texture establishes a defined contact finish. Finer machining reduces prominent tool marks along the working surface without changing the intended contour geometry.

Customization Capabilities

A drawing, model or physical sample defines the required contour. We establish the tool-access direction and machining references before programming the three-axis toolpath, then complete the accessible surfaces and secondary features to the approved part definition.

Quality Control

The incoming material is verified against the ordered grade and condition before the blank is prepared. The inspection drawing identifies the reference surfaces used to orient the contoured component for measurement.

First-article inspection uses the drawing datums to check the profile and its relationship to the secondary features. During production, dimensional sampling monitors tool wear, and specified contact surfaces are checked with a roughness instrument.

Final inspection covers each part's key dimensions and appearance, including gouges, raised edges and machining damage on the curved areas. Recorded results remain traceable to the part revision, with third-party inspection available before shipment.

FAQ

Q: What is the production lead time for custom contoured parts?

A: Custom production takes 10–15 days.

Q: How long does custom sample development take?

A: Sample development takes 10 days.

Q: How should a smooth transition between two curved surfaces be defined?

A: Define the transition radius and tangency in the 3D model.

Q: Can a hidden undercut be machined from the same direction as the outer contour?

A: Restricted undercuts require suitable cutter access, another setup or an additional operation.
